Mini Copter Skylight d220 / n170

Mini Copters are truly something exceptional.

On the internet they can be found in all different forms and colors.
But it is the same here: It has to be something extraordinary, something exclusive. A cross and four engines, that’s the example most of the mini copters follow.

We decided to build high-class frame: One with four, one with three crossbeams. Copters can be ordered coaxial or regular. They can be flown as + or as x.

Different materials can be used, among them are aluminum, brass or carbon.

Depending on the material, different sizes will be used in order to keep weight and stability in a certain extent.
Our coaxial engines will land directly on the airscrew. On the bottom, we used domed nuts in order not to disturb the way the copter flies. Due to the low dead load this is not a problem at all.
Despite of the rather small size, the way our copters fly is very calmly, not nervous at all and enjoyable to fly.

As always: everything is hand-made, no CNC machines or automated processes are being used.

Every copter will be manufactured on customer’s demand.
There is a choice of two different controllers. Choice follows usage and the future owner’s knowledge.

Now some information on weight and measures will be given.

distance from one engine to the other depending on the model n170 - 175mm and d220 - 220mm
it is being flown with 2 or 3s, capacity ranges from 800-1200 mA

  • length of time the copter can be used ranges from 10 to 12 minutes depending on style of flying and battery
  • overall weight including battery about 215g (carbon). Aluminum is about the same.
  • controller: special NanoWii
  • voltage control for early touchdown
  • there are enough reserves for cameras or other accessories
  • limiting is only the knowledge of the pilot. Modes: sport or regular. Using the sports mode taxiing, loops and flips are possible
  • the copter is very stable and thus suitable for young and old, for inside and outside
  • recently we have been working on a GPS function which will make it possible to start from a certain point and also includes a memory to store positions

Test flight with. Battery 2 s (7, 4V) and 800 mA.

Modes - normal mode

Manufacture in detail

It all starts with the frame. Every piece is milled by hand. Materials used are aluminum, brass, and carbon. Material thickness ranges from 0.5-0.8 mm depending on the material. The finished pieces are deburred and drilled afterwards.

The finished top piece without drilling holes. It will be deburred and drilled in a next step.

Milling of the middle pieces for the crossbeams. One crossbeam consists of two side pieces and one middle piece.

Here you can see the milled side pieces of the crossbeam.  The slots can clearly be seen. The side pieces will first be connected with the middle piece and then firmly linked by the bar spacers.

A finished crossbeam without space bars. In this picture it is not yet deburred and polished.

Size comparison.
Finished frame drilled with space bars. Here M 1.7 screws are being used. The frame is not polished yet.

Each engine is soldered by hand. For this engine three 0.8 mm gold-bonded connectors are needed in order to connect it to the controller.

Fitting of the engines on the holding tiles. The holding tiles are centered and avoid a shifting of the engines. Very important: If you are interested in a frame without any of the electronics, the holding tiles need to be constructed by yourself or you need to tell us the needed distance between the drilling holes.

Finished and polished frame. Afterwards, the electronic parts are being prepared for installation.

Installation of the electronic parts. Starting with the cabling of the LEDs; controllers, engines, receivers, and piloting are being integrated afterwards.

Micro LEDs, which are smaller than the end of a matchstick, are being used. Color and installation can be altered on demand. For example: Two in the front part and 2 on each crossbeam.

A finished frame (n170) in brass. Very important: If a frame made of brass is used a stronger battery is needed. Thus it will be flown 3s (11.1 V). In the next two weeks we will provide a video clip showing the flying characteristics.

Clearly shown here is the position of the controller. In the future, a dark foam material will be used. The controller, no matter if Eagle One or NanoWii, have to be placed on foam material because it channels off vibrations a lot better than rubber buffers.
